Dear Friends,

I want to thank you for your support since December 23, 2008.

We ran a significant and positive campaign. We kept it positive and respectable. To those who volunteered: sent emails, made calls, worked polls, gave of their resources, we are especially grateful to you.

I want to correct the Chronicle’s characterization of my position relating to the results of the March 2, 2010 Republican Primary (“Incumbents Base Losses on Ethnic Bias” 3/4/10).  I have never in my life directly felt the effects of racial bias, nor have I ever accused anyone of exhibiting prejudice against me due to my Hispanic heritage.  This includes my assessment of the Republican voters in this week’s Primary Election.

I am more determined than ever to work for our Republican principles and the leaders who uphold them.

Now, more than ever, we need to rally around qualified and credible leadership. Our future and our way of life is at stake.

Thank you and God bless,

Leo Vasquez

Harris County “All-Pro” Voter Registration Drive
The Houston Astros, Houston Texans, Houston Dynamo and the Houston Rockets will each host voter registration booths at one of their home games.

HOUSTON – August 6, 2009

“Houston’s pro sports teams, the Astros, Texans, Dynamo and Rockets, have found a way they can’t lose: by helping us in a voter registration drive,” Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar Leo Vasquez announced today.

Friday night, August 7th, at Minute Maid Park, as the Houston Astros play the Milwaukee Brewers, the Voter Registration team of the Harris County Tax Office will conduct a voter registration drive.  Registration materials will be available on the main concourse behind home plate between sections 118 and 119 with staff present to help assist in the registration process.

“When the Harris County Tax Office approached us about hosting a voter registration drive during a game we welcomed the opportunity to participate,” said Shawn Bertani, Astros Community Affairs Director. “Voting is a tremendous right afforded to all citizens, and in hosting this drive we hope that any Astros fans that are eligible to vote but are not yet registered will do so and then take an active role in upcoming elections.”

On Saturday, September 19th, the Voter Registration team will be at the Houston Dynamo’s match with Real Salt Lake.

Oliver Luck, President of the Houston Dynamo, said, “We are happy to work with the Harris County Voter Registrar on this voter registration drive and encourage all our fans to register to vote.”

Both the Houston Texans and Houston Rockets have also agreed to host a registration drive, with their exact dates to be announced soon. The Texans are looking at a home game in September, while the Rockets are looking at a home date in January 2010 for their voter registration game day.

“Like their games, the teams’ participation is exciting. This is a win for the continuing public-private partnership we are pioneering to make registering to vote convenient for every eligible citizen in Harris County,” Vasquez explained. “These teams exemplify the tremendous public spirit of our town.  Our Houston-area pro teams are great corporate citizens and truly care about our community.”
